 Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment that provides you with increased doses of pure oxygen, aiding in the healing of diseased or damaged tissue. During treatment, you will breathe 100% oxygen under pressure, versus the 21% in the air you normally breathe—enriching your bloodstream to encourage healing.  Based on your specific need, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may provide you with:

·          Advanced wound healing
·          Increased oxygen delivery to injured tissue
·          Preservation of damaged tissue
·          Greater blood vessel formation
·          Improved infection control
·          Elimination and reduced effects of toxic substances
·          Reduction or elimination of gas bubble obstructions

What will my treatment be like?
The treatment occurs with you lying comfortably inside a spacious pressurized chamber. While undergoing therapy, you can nap or watch television.

The treatment is painless, although at times you might experience a sensation of “fullness” in your ears, similar to what you may have felt while driving in the mountains or flying. Prior to starting your treatment, the hyperbaric staff will teach you how to relieve this pressure so you can avoid any discomfort.

Why do I need the Center for Hyperbarics and Wound Healing?
Most wounds heal with gauze, tape and patience, but the types of wounds cared for at the Center for Hyperbarics and Wound Healing are more complex and difficult to heal. Some wounds may have been present for a long time and, despite various treatments, have not improved or continue to recur.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments will be based on your individual need, as the treatment plan is tailored to each patient. Some emergency cases require few treatments, while others may require 20–40 treatments. The hyperbaric team will review your case with you to determine the recommended number of treatments.

How do I get started?
Normally, patients are referred to the Center for Hyperbarics and Wound Healing by their doctor. However, non-referral patients are welcome to make an appointment for an evaluation by calling 843.784.8210.

Will my referring doctor remain involved in my care?
When your doctor refers you to the Center for Hyperbarics and Wound Healing, it is for specialized treatment. You will continue to see your own doctor for management of diabetes, hypertension, cardiac or other medical problems. Plus, your doctor will be given periodic reports on your progress.

Does my insurance cover this treatment?
Services are usually covered by most insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid. Some insurance companies may require a referral from your doctor and prior approval. The staff at the center will be happy to assist you.
