About the Lowcountry

A place of true charm, dignity and genuine friendliness, Hardeeville is the Gateway to the Lowcountry of South Carolina, a land of moss-covered oak trees, palmettos and thousands of acres of stately southern pines.

Primary Service Area
Sitting on a 30-acre health care campus, Coastal Carolina Hospital is an 85,500 square-foot facility located in Hardeeville, South Carolina. The 41-bed acute-care hospital not only serves residents within Jasper County, but communities in southern Beaufort County such as Bluffton and Sun City as well. This particular area is also located in close proximity to Hilton Head Island, SC; Beaufort, SC; and Savannah, GA.

Specifically, the hospital is located near Interstate 95’s Exit 8, just off of Highway 278. Such an ideal location makes the hospital accessible for local residents and travelers alike. This, and the proximity of these areas to the I-95 and other main SC highways, provides access to more than 40,000 potential patients within the hospital's primary service area alone!

The Lowcountry
Every year, thousands of tourists, many of whom have chosen to relocate, enjoy the mild climate and the pleasant surroundings of the South Carolina Low country. Coastal Carolina Hospital is ideally situated just 30 minutes away from Savannah, Beaufort and the world-famous beaches of Hilton Head Island. The charming and beautiful city of Charleston is just 90 minutes to the north. Access to these communities, and their international airports, is made easier via Interstate. Additionally, the area boasts four primary U.S. highways, a north-south rail line for both freight and passenger service, and a 3,100-foot paved runway for private aircraft.

The area’s climate is mild with a mean annual temperature of 65.9 F. January’s average temperature is 49.9 F and July’s average temperature is 81.1 F. To see what our weather forecast for the next 10 days, click here.

Education
A combination of public schools, private academies and nearby colleges reflects the community’s commitment to education at all levels. University of South Carolina Beaufort and the Technical College of the Lowcountry both opened new campuses approximately 5 miles east of the hospital. In 2004, Beaufort County built a new $28.7 million high-tech high school, with wireless Internet access throughout, in nearby Bluffton, one of the fastest growing communities in the state. Many other new school are planned including a new high school that is scheduled to open in Jasper County this fall.

Arts, Antiques and Entertainment
Rich with history and small town atmosphere, the Bluffton area, located on the mainland to Hilton Head Island, has grown immensely in the last few years. Historic Downtown Bluffton offers a unique blend of antique shops, restaurants, art galleries and historical points of interest. Along Bluffton's Highway 278 corridor to Hilton Head Island, you’ll find an abundance of restaurants, outlet stores, businesses, shopping centers and much, much more.

Recreation
Just a stone’s throw away, Hilton Head Island is a golfer’s paradise, known for its world class championship courses. Hilton Head Island also has 12 miles of beautiful, wide, hard-packed beaches, perfect for bicycling, jogging, and sun bathing. There are 300 tennis courts, plus horseback riding, sailing, deep sea fishing, windsurfing, crabbing, canoeing and more. In addition to saltwater fishing, bodies of fresh water for fishing or kayaking include the Savannah, Tullifinny, Pocotaligo, New Rivers and Coosawhatchie. The Savannah Wildlife Refuge is a protected environment ideal for the “camera hunter” to spot a wide variety of species, including ducks, marsh hens and alligators. The Low country is renowned as a sportsman’s paradise, offering outstanding hunting for deer, turkeys, quail, doves, waterfowl and other game. It boasts a large number of hunting clubs, some operated from antebellum plantations.

A Growing Community
Between 1990 and 2000, Southern Beaufort County’s populations increased 39.9% (or 7.1% annually). Similarly, Jasper County experienced 33.5% jump between 1990 and 2000. During that same time period, Bluffton grew 17% annually (13 times the national average).

Growth within the area has been fueled by the following:
Tourism
Del Webb’s 5,600 acre off-island retirement community - Sun City
Development of Palmetto Bluff
Development of the Buckwalter Tract
Proposed Jasper County Port
Development of two new campuses in New River area - USC-B and Technical College of the Lowcountry
Development of Traditions - a Core Community
